INTA realiza estudio que revela vínculo entre desnutrición, salud mental y soledad en personas mayores

Con el objetivo de profundizar en los niveles de inseguridad alimentaria y el estado nutricional de la población mayor de 65 años, el Núcleo de Envejecimiento y Calidad de Vida del Instituto de Nutrición y Tecnología de los Alimentos (INTA) de la Universidad de Chile, con el apoyo de Alimentos y Bebidas de Chile (AB Chile), presentó el primer informe del estudio “Evaluación de biomarcadores, mediciones antropométricas y funcionales en personas mayores de la Región Metropolitana”.

La exposición de los resultados estuvo a cargo de la profesora titular de la Universidad de Chile, doctora Cecilia Albala, y contó con la participación de Carmen Gloria Yáñez, directora de Asistencia Técnica del INTA; del profesor Moisés Sandoval; y de la gerenta general de AB Chile, Marisol Figueroa.

La investigación tomó como base los hallazgos de la Encuesta de Salud, Seguridad Alimentaria y Calidad de Vida (ESSALCAVI) 2024, y evidencia una estrecha relación entre riesgo de desnutrición, fragilidad física, salud mental y soledad en personas mayores. Entre sus principales conclusiones, el estudio identifica que la inseguridad alimentaria y el aislamiento social son factores
determinantes en el deterioro de la calidad de vida y la funcionalidad durante el envejecimiento.

Asimismo, los resultados aportan evidencia relevante para el desarrollo de estrategias orientadas a promover un envejecimiento saludable y prevenir situaciones de fragilidad y dependencia en la población mayor.

Debido a la relevancia de sus conclusiones, la investigación será presentada en el XXIII Congreso Mundial de Gerontología y Geriatría, que se realizará en julio próximo en Holanda.
